The first of two repairs costing more than £100,000 are set to be completed over the coming months at one of Diss’ most iconic landmarks.

Diss Town Council have deliberated for several months how to tackle two problems at the Mere.

On Monday, work costing £33,296 began to replace a section of the drain damaged by tree roots, a partial collapse, and an inadequate outflow system. The money has come from the council’s allocated reserves.

Contractors Dunella Ltd have been called in to complete the work on the drain, which runs underneath the soon-to-be Aldi supermarket, and into the River Waveney, and will take around four weeks to complete.

A spokesperson for Diss Town Council said towards the end of the contact, in order to carry out work on the Mere side of the drain, Madgett’s Walk will be closed to the public and should take no longer than a week, with weekends being avoided unless essential.

They added: “The council is working closely with the Aldi supermarket contractors to fit the work in around their schedule to avoid delays to their planned store opening at the end of November.

“The council will endeavour to minimise disruption during the works, which will help maintain a consistent water level and minimise local flooding.”

Repairs to Madgett’s Walk, which has fallen away, will start on September 8.

The work, which follows months of investigative surveys and a complex tender process, will see the level of the Mere bed supporting the collapsed wall raised, the collapsed area rebuilt and strengthened, and preventative measures taken to other parts of the walk deemed at risk.

It will cost the council £73,621, funded through a capital loan, and carried out by GT Rochester Plant Ltd.

Madgett’s Walk will be closed for the duration of the work, expected to last around eight weeks.

The council say the work has been scheduled to avoid school holidays, in the hope it will be completed by Christmas.
