The recent Diss Carnival celebrations brought memories for Bob Ward, who has sent in a copy of his programme for the 13th annual Diss Gymkhana from 72 years ago.
Mr Ward is a collector of Diss memorabilia.

His programme shows that the event, at the Rectory Meadow on Saturday July 4, 1936, was held with the kind permission of the Rev L. Holt Wilson and the Diss Schools Sports Committee.

The programme o
f events included the Dagenham Girl Pipers band – superbly clad in the Royal Stewart tartan and led by Pipe-Major Charles Cameron.

J.P. Hayhurst, England's champion stunt motorcyclist, dazzled the show with his 'Wizardry on Wheels'.

Also performing was the Great Risko Circus, featuring a Frenchman by birth "who has done every kind of aerial stunts, from wire walking to performing on an 18-inch platform 100ft in the air," and the two Cidonas comedy clowns.

Mr Ward said he would be interested to find out if people remember local names, which include: Mr E.E. Thurlow presenting awards as a chief steward; trick riding by Mr C.H. Bassingthwaighte; tractor racing by Mr C.G. Edwards and seating by Mr C. Denny.

Ring steward was Mr W.B.A. Gaze and ticket manager and radio steward was Mr A.J. Short. The honourable secretary and organiser was Mr C.E.J. Gaze.

Other surnames listed include Jeffery, Apthorpe, Bale, Bloye, Chitty, Goold and Catchpole.
