Memories of Diss carnivals from nearly 60 years ago were relived when Wendy Munford brought in three old photos to the Diss Express office.
Mrs Munford found the photos about six years ago when clearing her parents' house.

The re-emergence of the carnival this year prompted her to bring them in.

The main picture shows the children's fancy dress procession coming down Mere Street in July 1949.

On the right in the foreground is the Ship Inn pub, which now houses the offices of the Diss Express.

Mrs Munford said: "The fancy dress parade was a big deal for the children back then.

"Everybody really looked forward to it. The children would lead the procession and the floats would then follow."

The photo, left, taken in the mid 1950s, shows Mrs Munford's sister, Peggy Youell, receiving an award from the Carnival Queen of that year, Pauline Ward, on the junior school meadow.

Mrs Munford said: "Years ago we would go to the Corn Hall and vote on who should be Carnival Queen.

"It was such a big occasion and the whole town would get involved.

"I hope this year's carnival can be a return to the success of carnivals back then."

The final picture was taken on the old playing fields in Park Road, where Morrisons now stands and shows all the children after being judged in the fancy dress parade.
