News that Diss Carnival will be returning this year has provoked plenty of memories of past carnivals.
One feature that Ivy Kerry would love to see return is the best dressed car competition.

Mrs Kerry, of Fitzwalter Road, Diss, used to spend hours in the 1970s and 1980s painstakingly forming ideas and moulding paper mache ideas to dress up her and
her husband Fred’s car.

Mrs Kerry said: “The cars were themed, one year I did the Mere and on another I dressed it with characters from Magic Roundabout.”

“It took me years to win the cup for the best car, but I did it in 1980 with a Muppets Show theme.”

David Hines remembers that the parade ground was at Roydon Road and hosted events as diverse as wrestling and horse riding.

There was a wild west show with people doing tricks and Mr Hines said: “One man was hanging off the side of the horse while it was running at great speed and he cracked his head against a wall. He was patched up before the event continued but the blood was talked about for the rest of the day!”

Mr Hines also remembers dressing up as a bag of horse nuts and a white rabbit but this year he plans to wear military uniform when he parades through town in a wartime jeep.
