The ink was hardly dry on the Diss Express when readers started telling us more about the Carnival Queen poser in the May 15 edition.
Roland Buggey had submitted pictures of Pauline Ward but wanted to know which year they were from.

Michael Burton of Eye said Pauline Ward was now Pauline Seeley, the postmistress in Eye.

He said the pictures were from 1953.

“I remember it well because it was Coronation Year and my father, Evelyn, was president of the Chamber of Trade that year. He was manager of the Eastern Electricity Board in Diss.”

Mr Burton was not in the area at the time. He was serving with the Army Guard Dog Unit as part of the Royal Army Veterinary Company in Hong Kong.

“I read all about the Carnival because I used to get copies of the Diss Express air-mailed to me over there,” he said.

Sybil Watling, of Thomas Manning Way, Diss, rang to agree with Mr Burton that the Carnival Queen was Pauline Seeley of Eye Post Office.

She said: “I worked in Hilton’s Shoe Shop for 26-and-a-half years and remember her well.

“She looked so beautiful.”
