Accent is on wartime recollections

A local link with secret war time tactics landed an Alburgh man with an interesting piece of Second World War naval history.
Geoffrey Wilyman, 90, was given the brass emblem of French destroyer, The Duplex, by Lady Elizabeth Craig, who trained British paratroopers different regional accents to prevent them being caught by German soldiers when dropped behind enemy lines.
The navy war veteran, who will be known to many people through his accordion playing at the Mere's Mouth on Fridays, came to know Lady Craig after working as a cameraman for Fox MovieTone News, run by her husband Sir Gordon Craig.
He was presented with it in 1948 by Lady Craig, who was herself given the piece by the French 1st Lieutenant of the Duplex at Chorleywood in 1947 for her wartime services.
