Despite seeming to the outsider that being a funeral director would be a sombre job, Andrew Fairweather claims his occupation is one of the best he has had.
Rackham's Funeral Service, based in Diss, has been established for nearly 90 years and is one of the sponsors and exhibitors at next Friday's Diss On View trade fair, organised by the Diss Business Forum.

Mr Fairweather has been a funeral director at Rackham's for six years.

He said: "I can honestly say it is one of the best places I have worked at. The team are very professional and we work so well together."

He said Diss On View comes at an important time with the economy facing a downturn.

"We are fortunate in the fact the company, for obvious reasons, has to keep going by its very nature," he said. "But I think it's important for businesses to support one another at a difficult time trade wise."

Mr Fairweather said the range of free seminars was also an excellent resource for people in the business community.

"We went last year to Diss On View and found the seminars very informative and useful," he said.

"I got a great deal out of it about keeping hold of clients which is a strange thing to say the least about a funeral service!"

The company serves about 400 to 450 funerals per year from its Diss office, along the Waveney Valley, and Mr Fairweather said events like Diss On View were important to keep theirs and other firms thriving.

"It is something which is growing in this area. As someone who has been in business for five or six years, it has been quite encouraging to see how it has grown over the last few years."

Other exhibitors at Diss On View include:

  • Business Link – Operating throughout Norfolk and the East of England, Business Link offers independent and impartial advice for new businesses.

  • It offers company reviews and signpost ways to achieve improvement, have access to information available through a dedicated information and intelligence centre and offer seminars covering aspects of starting a new business.

It delivers services on behalf of the East of England Development Agency.
