Star spangled fun planned for fete

Carleton Rode villagers will be unfurling the Star Spangled Banner to celebrate American Independence Day at their annual village fete tomorrow.

Even the canine community will be getting into the spirit of the day with an American-themed dog fancy dress competition.

Fete chairman Reg Love said: “Because this year’s event fell on July 4 and we have links with the American Air Force through Second World War local airfields, we thought it would be fun to go Yanky Doodle mad.”

The Starlight Express Majorettes from Norwich will be performing in the main ring and young visitors can have a go at baton twirling.

There will be a pigeon racing competition where members of the public pick which bird they think will arrive back in Carleton Rode first. The pigeons are being released 250 miles away in Cumbria in the morning.

The fete starts at 2pm at the village hall and will be packed with traditional stalls and competitions, cake stalls, craft stands, as well as bowling for a pig, human fruit machine, ice creams, hot dogs, treasure hunt and tombola. Entrance is free and all money raised will benefit church funds.
