REVIEW: Cage The Elephant – Norwich UEA
Friday night saw a throng of young rock fans descend on the UEA to catch America's Cage The Elephant bringing their own brand of rock 'n' roll to Norfolk.
Refreshingly for a sizeable touring band, Cage The Elephant have a policy of recruiting support bands from the areas they visit.
However, the honours of playing the largest venue on the Norwich circuit was a bit of a double-edged sword – could a local band cut it in such a large venue?
The first of two supporting bands was Glory Glory, a boy guitarist and girl drummer duo from Bury St Edmunds. Without a bassist, comparisons to the White Stripes were inevitable.
A duo was followed by a trio in the shape of Uh Ohs from Norwich who, have quite a distinguished touch of dynamics and more complex structure to their repertoire.
Cage The Elephant finally stormed the stage, filling it with their energy and music which sounded like Rolling Stones in their late 1960s heyday.
Frontman Matt Schultz leaped about the stage like a young Iggy Pop, giving everyone a good view, while his bandmates seemed quite static and uninterested in comparison.
Musically, a flawless performance made for great crowd singalongs notably during the hits Ain't No Rest For the Wicked and In One Ear.
