REVIEW: Blues gig was Taylor-made
Although not as well attended as November's Nine Below Zero concert, Mick Taylor's gig on Saturday was another well received concert arranged by Denny Newman.
The night started with Newman's The Regulars, with blues guitarist Clive Mulcahey in place of their frontman.
After a short set, ending with a highly-charged rendition of the Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor, Newman joined his Regulars for a set of original material and covers including a slot by guest musician Charlie Harper on harmonica.
Mick Taylor came on, backed by The Regulars, and performed a selection of numbers from his most recent studio album, A Stone's Throw.
He then launched into Fed Up With The Blues, a number he had been taught by John Mayall, whose Bluesbreakers he had joined as a teenager.
Taylor then dipped into the blues music that inspired him and his work with Bob Dylan in the 1980s.
To conclude, Taylor played some of the highlights from his time with the Rolling Stones including Can You Hear Me Knockin' from the Sticky Fingers album and, after being called back for an encore, No Expectations from the Stone's pre-Taylor album Beggars Banquet.
It was a set performed by a man and a band in love with the music they play.
As well as proving why he was regarded as one of the best blues guitarists of his generation, Taylor chatted to the audience and moved around the stage with a slight spring in his step.
