Musical launch for programme

The New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich will launch its autumn 2009 programme with the world premiere of a new musical - the stage version of the James Stewart classic It's a Wonderful Life.

Produced in association with Avalon Promotions, the fully-staged musical will feature a cast of 17. Its screenplay has been adapted by Steve Brown, who wrote the musical Spend, Spend, Spend, the story of pools winner Viv Nicholson.

It’s a Wonderful Life will be directed by Wolsey artistic director Peter Rowe and runs from September 10 to October 3.

From October 5 to 7, Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale will take to the stage, followed by Spymonkey making its first visit to Ipswich with a presentation of Moby Dick from October 8 to 10.

The laughter continues on October 11 with Hugh Hughes in ...360, the latest instalment from the man behind Floating and Story of a Rabbit.

October 14 to 17 will see LipService serve up Desperate to be Doris, a new comedy with music featuring some of Doris Day’s greatest hits.

Ace drummers Noise Ensemble sold-out in the spring season and are back on October 23 and 24 to present Cacophony, another drumming extravaganza with workshops for wannabe drummers of all ages in the afternoon.

Other musical highlights include Adriano Adewale Group on October 22, the female comedy trio Fascinating Aida on October 26, and Nik Kershaw on November 15.

English Touring Theatre presents Roger McGough’s adaptation of Moliere’s The Hypochondriac from November 3 to 7 and The Watermill Theatre presents Hot Mikado from November 10 to 14.

Other highlights include Company FZ’s psychological thriller We Can Be Heroes on October 29, Under 18s Comedy on October 27, children’s show The Enormous Turnip from December 9 to January 2, and the Wolsey Theatre’s Christmas panto Aladdin, which will run from November 26 to January 30.
