A sprinkling of stardust at Norwich Theatre Royal
Richard Alston Dance Company this week provided a very modern ballet experience, with stark staging and cleanly presented music allowing the audience to focus almost entirely on the dancers’ movements and ground-breaking choreography.
Opening with Buzzing Round the Hunisuccle, the stacatto oriental-feel to Jo Kondo’s score provided lots of angular shapes and movements. Next came Shimmer, with music by Ravel and dancers in cobweb costumes designed by Julien Macdonald, encrusted with crystals and shimmering like stardust.
Finally came The Devil in the Detail, an uplifting piece danced to Scott Joplin’s ragtime tunes and superbly complimented by a virtuoso performance from pianist Jason Ridgway. JUDY FOSTER
