Knights ride in for festival

Plans are under way for Diss to stage its own music festival next July.

The programme will provide something for all musical tastes and will be headlined by 1960s comedy band The Barron Knights.

Town councillor Glyn Walden is spearheading a team which will organise the eight-day event.

It will tie in with South Norfolk Council's Festival of the Arts which runs throughout next summer.

Also planned is a Festival Of Song, which will see performances by massed school choirs, square and country dancing, a classical evening, jazz, tea dances and a special Latin/Caribbean evening with traditional food and dancers.

The Corn Hall is lined up to be the venue for several events, with other open air performances in the Park and Market Place.

Mr Walden said: "At present, I am still in the early stages of forming an enthusiastic and reliable team to make sure all the events run smoothly, but at the moment we are still receiving feedback from local people as to what they would like to support.

"Some events will require an admission fee, but there will be some which will be free to lots of music lovers. It will be a chance to involve local talent."

The town council is backing the programme and talks have already taken place with South Norfolk's community officers.

Mr Walden added: "It is several years since our last festival and this one, hopefully, will have something for all tastes and all ages. From the buskers to the Barron Knights, it will be a great week."

The Barron Knights, who will be star attractions at the festival, first hit the spotlight 47 years ago.

Brian Epstein saw them perform and asked them to support The Beatles on their Fab Four's UK theatre tour.

Since then, they have perfected the art of comedy pop and continued to tour both at home and abroad.

Their show includes their many hits, including Call Up The Groups, Pop Go The Workers and A Taste of Aggro.
