Roadworks are already solving speeding problem

My heart sank as I read last week's Diss Express (Help cut town speed menace), where the public is being given the chance to help clamp down on speeding.
While the proposals from Diss Town and South Norfolk Councils are laudable, they appear to throw up an inconsistency.

Civilian teams being issued with Speedar radar cameras will pick up registration numbers of speeding vehicles, and police will issue owners with warning letters.

At no point does it say that prosecution will follow. If not, why not?

If I break the speed limit driving down the A140 and am caught by a mobile police or fixed camera unit I will be prosecuted and fines/points incurred with no warning issued.

It is arguable who is the more dangerous; whether it’s the speeder on the open road or the idiots or ‘boy racers’ who charge round the middle of Diss.

I would suggest it is the latter but there’s no denying that both are breaking the law.

More worrying is the apparent dereliction of duty by the police to enforce the law outside of office hours. As recent history has shown, you will be lucky to drive at 3mph through Diss during the day because of roadworks let alone exceed the speed limit.

I am concerned that such proposals will just encourage the police to withdraw further behind their desks and not show any regular presence on the streets, particularly in the evenings when such excessive speeding within Diss town centre is likely to take place.

n So Diss Town Council is leading the community Speedwatch Campaign which will target anti-social behaviour and speeding in the town by arming volunteers with speed cameras – why not machine guns and hand grenades? – and the teams are going to be issued with reflective jackets, signs and a paperwork pack by Norfolk Constabulary. Why not flak jackets and gas masks? It’s obviously full-blown anarchy and the police are staying out of it.

How about doings things the Pete Gillings way? Take away all the yellow lines and no-parking signs, let people fill up Diss with cars and solve two problems. The lack of parking and speeding.

You can’t drive fast when there is only a nine-foot gap in the middle of the road.
