First, the resolution as passed, was that which was agreed by Diss Town Council by an overwhelming majority, namely one hour free on all parks with some adjustments to the rates to be charged on longer periods.
In addition, concerns by individual
councillors regarding concessions for other issues or closer monitoring of on-street parking, were also presented to South Norfolk Council by the clerk for consideration,
but were not part of the resolution.
The amendment putforward by Dr Murray Gray to provide all day parking on Saturdays was a stunt.
It was a cynical and hypocritical stunt to divide the local members from the policy process. We knew it was coming, but we won't say how!
We appreciate his interest but Dr Gray was not elected to speak for the residents of Diss nor the cluster of villages which support the economy of our town but the Liberal Democrats had 12 years to provide free parking in Diss.
Does anyone believe that if they had been elected in May 2007 they would have introduced free parking?
Of course not, but we would still be subject to the £20 fines which have prevailed for overstaying one's time while waiting to see a doctor at the Health Centre, or for popping into town to draw money.
The revenue from Diss though would still be used to fund the car parks throughout South Norfolk.
Now everyone from Garboldisham to Dickleburgh, or Yaxley to Mellis south of the border can travel to shop anywhere in Diss free of charge for a whole hour.
That is 60 minutes more than we would ever have been given by the Liberal Democrats. Hardly any wonder they were blown away in the local elections 12 months ago.
