Final preparations are under way for the 2008 Attleborough Carnival, which runs from this Sunday to next.
Now in its 36th year, a new committee has promised this year's carnival will place the emphasis on family fun and involvement for all.

Mark Green, who has helped to organise the event, said: "We
want to make the carnival one of the biggest succe
sses in Norfolk
and we can only do this with the help and support of the community."

A carnival showpiece will be Party on the Park on July 12, including tribute act Paula Randell performing songs by Cher and Tina Turner.

Take That 2, who have performed with the real group, are also on stage.
Local rock talent being showcased includes Attleborough's Byron Jenness, who has recently recorded a new album.

Programmes are on sale, priced £2.50, from many of Attleborough's shops, as well as on the door of any event.

They grant access to the whole carnival, with the exception of the Party On The Park which is £3 to enter.

The programme's cover has been designed by 11-year-old Attleborough Junior School pupil Harriet Bettridge.

Mr Green said: "We have taken on board past comments about the carnival and we're making sense of them.

"We're bringing back the old events that people could get involved in and have a laugh as a community such as the tug of war.

"All the children taking part in events will get a medal. The carnival should be about having fun and not spending lots of money."

The family fun day and carnival itself will round off the week on July 13.

The floats will start a little earlier this year at 11.30am to give visitors more chance to enjoy the fun day afterwards on the Recreation Ground.

Activities planned for the fun day include a Kuk Sool Won martial arts display, a Diss Fire Cadet display, tug-of-war competition and the Banham Poultry five-a-side football tournament.

Throughout the week there will events including a carnival prince and princess competition on Monday, at Attleborough Junior School from 6pm, and the crowning of the carnival's Rose Queen, on Thursday, 7.30pm, at Attleborough High School.

Programmes are available from the Diss Fire Cadets at Diss Fire Station. A percentage of the programme cover price will be donated to the Cadets.
