Teacher walked four miles through snow blizzard
The recent Olive Tye book review brought a response from Susan Bradbrook (nee Holmes), who was a pupil at Wingfield School during Mrs Tye's time there in the 1950s.
She said: "The recent snow and school closures reminded me when I had walked to school through deep snow, only to find that the dinners which had to come by road, could not get through so we were sent home again.
"I lived two miles away on the Hoxne road and remember vividly walking home with Mrs Tye in a snow blizzard, and asking her in to our house for a rest, but she declined and carried on to Hoxne.
" I know that times have changed and there are so many more cars on the roads today but how many people would walk about four miles in a snow blizzard these days?
"Normally she would bike from Hoxne to Wingfield."
Mrs Bradbrook also has memories of the school milk being frozen, popping out of the top of the bottles and having to try to thaw it out to drink it, and is looking forward to obtaining a copy of the book.
Mrs Tye lived in Courthouse Cottage, Hoxne, for most of her life, although she was born at 49 Low Street in the village.
