Smallworth, Norfolk. Diamond Wedding couple John and Jean Taylor

A Garboldisham couple who met at the village youth club 63 years ago, have celebrated their diamond wedding.

John and Jean Taylor were married at Watton registry office on January 10, 1953, at the ages of 21 and 18, after meeting every Saturday night at a dance in Blo Norton.

Mr and Mrs Taylor, now 82 and 78, were both born in Garboldisham but Mr Taylor moved to Gasthorpe at the age of five.

He moved back to Garboldisham to set up a home with his wife when they were married, and over the years has worked in a garage, on his parents’ farm and as a lorry driver. Mrs Taylor worked as a nanny.

The couple have four children, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

They will be joined by their family and friends for a party to celebrate the milestone at Hopton Bowls Club today, where they will be accepting donations to the East Anglian Air Ambulance instead of presents.

Mr and Mrs Taylor are both keen bowls players, and have been active members of the club, with Mr Taylor still looking after the green.

When asked what their secret to a long and happy marriage was, Mrs Taylor said: “We both like the same things so that helps. We always get on and we never argue. We’re both so active, we never sit down.”
