Former Eye teacher, mayor and scout founder recalled

Richard Parker

Richard Parker

A former mayor of Eye who also worked as teacher in the town will be remembered in a memorial service on November 25.

Richard Parker - who also founded the 1st Eye Scout Group - was a biology teacher at the former Eye Grammar School from 1945 until it closed in the early 1960s. He then took a post at Diss Grammar School until his retirement.

Born in London in 1917, Mr Parker read biology at London University, and then trained as a teacher in Nottingham.

As a conscientious objector he taught in a Jewish primary school at the start of the Second World War, and then served as a firefighter until it ended.

Father Chris Atkinson, who gave the homily at a requiem mass held a few weeks ago, said Mr Parker was an innovative teacher dedicated to helping children fulfil their potential.

Mr Parker was active in the community: acting as a member of Eye Town Council for many years, including as mayor.

As well as the Eye Town Council award for services to the community, he also received the Mid Suffolk District Council Community Achievement Award in 2005.

But, the focal point of Mr Parker’s life was the church, where over the years, he held a variety of positions, including been churchwarden, lay elder, head server, and verger.

His memorial service will be held in Eye Church at 3pm.
