Beat those holiday blues
Columnist Brigitte Girling explains ways you can de-clutter your summer holiday.
I have noticed just recently, the occasional whiff of sun cream in the air and the feeling that those lovely long warm days of summer are soon going to be with us.
So for many of us, the annual summer break is looming. Bags and suitcases will need to be packed.
Holidays can be stressful at the best of times but with a little organisation and forward planning, at least the packing can be accomplished without too much angst.
A couple of weeks before you go, check that the bags you are planning to use are still in good working order.
Then begin to gather together the clothing and items that you think you may need on your trip.
I find it best to lay things out on a spare bed and then put at least a third of everything I thought I may need back in the cupboard!
You will find that you don't need that extra woolly – just in case – or those wonderful high heels that might look good if you go to a posh restaurant! If your clothing and items cannot multitask and by that I mean be used in various ways and on several occasions then they should not be going in your bag!
A good way to stop jumble sale suitcase syndrome while away is to pack similar items together in separate clear plastic bags.
Then you can sort through your case looking for a particular item without churning everything else about. Pack socks and knickers inside shoes and place toiletries in little travel bottles, easily obtainable from chemists and put them in a waterproof wash bag – you know why!
Always make sure you pack a laundry bag so that all dirty items can be kept separate. If you want to be really ready for the washing machine when you get home take two bags – for whites and colours!
Finally, when you do return from your wonderfully relaxing holiday – make a quick packing list of everything that was useful and place it in your case for next year! Oh and don't forget your passport!
