The Mere Players' involvement in Diss Carnivals was always one of the highlights of the weekend.
With their colourful costumes and vibrant sets, they always turned more than a few heads in the carnival parade.

So memories will be rekindled this week with these photos from Edna Miller, the former costume designer for the Players.

"Having got so many memories of the old carnivals I thought it'd be a good time to share them with everyone," she said.

Mrs Miller, of Willbye Avenue, Diss, has made more than 1,000 costumes and props for the Players over the years.

The first photo shows one of the floats she helped decorate some 30 years ago, with the theme being kings and queens through the ages.

"I remember that day as we all got sopping wet because it rained so much," she said. "We hung up all the costumes at the youth centre. Because they were old and made of fur they stunk the place out!"

Another photo was from 1959 and it shows her three-year-old son with her husband and the Carnival Queen.

Mrs Miller said: "It was taken on a field off Park Road which was given to the town council for the children to play on. The Carnival Queen was called Maureen but I can't remember her surname."

The final two photos were from a more recent carnival, and both show members of the Mere Players in full fancy dress.

One shows a scene from My Fair Lady. The float was one of the focal points of that year's procession and was well received.

The other photo from that year shows members of the Players in circus fancy dress, something which certainly caught the eye.

"I thought this would be a nice picture to include as it shows people in fancy dress and having fun, which is what the carnival is about," said Mrs Miller.

"The costumes were very cheap to make, which shows that dressing up for this year's carnival won't break the bank," she added.
