Football: Ipswich Town fan Nick Wells says it is now or never for the Blues to find consistency

IPSWICH must now embark on the greatest quest of all; the search for consistency.
All season you will hear supporters bemoaning their club's flaw of going from awesome to awful but with just eight games to go it is now or never for Town to unlock the secret of consistency, if we are going to make the play-offs.

After a gutless surrender at struggling Barnsley, Super Jim's charges bounced back with a victory over promotion rivals Charlton, with a performance over-flowing with spirit and determination.

But a trip to Scunthorpe tomorrow will be another trap for Town to transform from beauty into beast.

Town's search for consistency is hindered by the fact that we no longer have a settled side.

Whereas at the start of the season we had a squad thinner than Heather Mills' chances of going out for a quick Perrier with Sir Paul's solicitor, we also rode our luck with injuries.

Now our January-bolstered squad gives Jim a plethora of choices but he is not necessarily able to make the ones he wants because of the recent small stampede towards the Portman Road treatment room.

Jon Walters is potentially out for the rest of the season, which is a massive blow, as he has been without doubt our best player of the campaign.

While David Norris' heel problem is another obstacle for our £2 million man, as he tries to settle down at his new home.

Even though these two players are probably the first names on Jim's team sheet, they have also caused the biggest selection headaches because of their versatility.

We still don't know, at the business end of the season, what Jim's first choice XI is. Whether he wants Walters in midfield or
up-front or Norris in the centre or on the right?

The make-up of Jim's favourite back four is equally murky with Dan Harding and Sito playing tag team at left back and Alex Bruce and David Wright rarely playing two games in the same position.

Add to the equation Jim's desire to bring in at least another two loanees before the emergency window shuts on Thursday, then our starting XI begins to look a bit muddled.

This is fine when you're experimenting in August but could be detrimental to all our hard work if it's still going on in March.

The time for shuffling the pack is over.

If we are to go on a glory run to the play-offs and possibly beyond, then Jim must deal his best hand now.
