Camera Obscura finally escaped fellow Glaswegians Bell & Sebastian's shadow with their last album, the sublime Let's Get Out Of The Country.
One of the keys to that album's success was producer Jari Haapalainen's canny knack of pushing the band to back frontwoman Tracyanne Campbell's lovelorn vocals with a Phil Spector-esque Wall of Sound.

It is no surprise to see Haapalainen back behind the mixing desk for My Maudlin Career, in which Campbell's songs reach new levels of heartache.

Never has sorrow sounded so wonderful.
